About The Clinic
Corrective Chiropractic was established in 2004 by Chiropractor and Clinic Director Mark Whitfield. From the humble beginnings as a sole chiropractor clinic, the clinic has grown to now provide both remedial massage and Naturopathic services in addition to the existing Chiropractic service. The goal of the clinic is to provide exceptional, quality service to all of its patients whilst continually educating people on the importance of maintaining a healthy functioning spine and nervous system to ensure optimal health and wellness on a daily basis and improve overall quality of life.
Most people are surprised to learn that a correctly functioning spine, and hence a healthy functioning nervous system can assist greatly in the prevention of colds, flu’s, sinus problems, pins and needles and even colic and bedwetting in children. What often comes as even more of a surprise is the fact that simply because you don’t suffer any symptoms, doesn’t mean you have a correctly functionally spine and nervous system. Like heart disease, cholesterol and tooth decay, symptoms of spine and associated nerve problems may not present til later in the degenerative process.
Of course not all organ or muscle disorders are necessarily corrected with chiropractic alone. They may require extra supplementation with certain nutrients, vitamins or natural remedies. In these particular situations, a consultation with the clinic Naturopath can often prove beneficial. Similarly, some conditions require extensive treatment or rehabilitation to the muscular system, in which case our in-house massage therapist can be of valuable assistance.
Chiropractic is the detection and correction of misaligned spinal bones to remove pressure off spinal nerves. These nerves provide vital information communicating the brain with the rest of the body so it is crucial that these nerves aren’t being pinched or irritated. Chiropractors are trained extensively to detect these areas of spinal nerve irritation and most importantly, they are trained to safely and gently correct the misalignments before further problems arise.
At Corrective Chiropractic patients vary from 2 weeks old to ninety years of age and are treated through the use of a wide variety of techniques. Conditions treated most commonly comprise low back pain, headaches, neck pain, sciatica and pins and needles. However, conditions also managed include sinus, neuralgia, arm and leg pain, jaw pain, tendonitis, arthritis and even colic, reflux and bedwetting in children. However, the approach taken by most patients is that of spinal maintenance care. Like visiting your dentist for a check up or regularly servicing your car, most patients visit the clinic for a spinal “check-up” to make sure everything is in place and working correctly. This is to prevent symptoms occurring or re-occurring. Remember, Prevention is better than the cure!
About the Clinicians
The Chiropractor
Mark Whitfield graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Science degree before completing his Masters of Chiropractic degree in 1998 at Macquarie University in Sydney. Having worked as an associate at a busy clinic in Parramatta, Sydney for four years, Mark decided to return home to Brisbane. After continuing to work as an associate Chiropractor at a highly regarded, busy Brisbane city practice, Mark opened Corrective Chiropractic in May, 2004 to service the Algester and surrounding suburban areas.
Mark practices using a variety of treatment techniques that range from more passive adjustments using an Activator instrument, to more “manual” style adjustments using both Diversified manual technique and Drop-table adjusting. Whilst commonly utilised to remove irritation to spinal nerves, Mark also uses specific adjustment techniques to treat peripheral problems. These types of conditions may vary from shoulder, elbow or wrist complaints to hip, knee or foot problems. In addition to adjustment procedures, Mark also incorporates relevant stretching and basic muscle release techniques as well prescribing any home stretching and/or strengthening rehabilitation exercises that may be necessary. All patient cases are examined with a holistic view in mind thus particular workstation and sleep posture, external activities and diet may also need to be assessed.
Should a patient require more extensive soft tissue rehabilitation or further advice in diet, weight loss or vitamin/mineral supplementation, a consult with our Naturopath and Massage Therapist may be recommended.
